Jessica Simpson Goes To The Gym
Aug 11th
Jessica Simpson, Last Month, went to the gym. I was following John Mayer and he was actually on his way to the gym himself. But when he noticed all the paparazzi standing there with their cameras exposed as they waited for Jessica Simpson to come out, he said, ‘Screw that!’ He left and I stayed waiting for Jessica.

He Gets A Text From Jessica Simpson!
Jul 1st
I knew that it was something more important than I thought. He all of a sudden gets a very important text from Jessica Simpson… Well, I think it was her since he was hanging out with her trainer and after having lunch they headed to the gym where she was at. Unfortunately there were some paparazzi waiting for Jessica to come out and so John Mayer did not stick around. Yup, that was the story and no one but myself knew it!

EXCLUSIVE: My First Iconic Image Of Jessica and John Smiling!
Mar 29th
I was still asleep when my Pap Alert started going off the hook. By the third time that it rang, I figured that it was something important. It was about 1:00 PM on Saturday and I was still sleeping, well, until I got woken up. When I answered, I looked to see who it was and it was my girlfriend. She says to me, “I have a good tip for you.” I asked her, “What is it?”

“Jessica Simpson and John Mayer just …

Jessica Simpson Yelled At The Paparazzi Today!

Just as I was finishing off Nicky Hilton, two paparazzi pulled over to see what I was taking pictures of. They initially thought that it was Paris Hilton also since they also noticed her car parked on the opposite side of the road. They came out with no cameras and told that I should call some backup since if I stick around for Paris that I would miss Jessica Simpson on Third St and La Cienega Blvd.

I initially thought that they …

EXCLUSIVE: Jessica Simpson Is Ready For The Rain!
Feb 22nd
It was a long follow. She never knew that I was behind them all along. It all started as I was making my normal route through the streets of West Hollywood. I was heading eastbound on Santa Monica Blvd and to my surprise; Jessica Simpson was literally right next to me in her blacked out SUV. I have never seen her SUV and since the tint was so dark, it took me a while to verify that it was her.

She makes a right on La Cienega Blvd heading straight into the sharks den. Luckily since it was raining, no paparazzo’s jumped my story then. She makes a left on Third St and I continue to worry that I was going to get jumped. She pulls over at a little tea place on that street but she doesn’t get out. Her assistant was doing all the dirty work of getting out. I don’t even know if her assistant bought anything since she came out very quickly.

The follow was on again. We were still heading eastbound on Third St and then she decides to make a left on Fairfax Blvd. I was still behind her and yes! That turn that she did was illegal. Where are the cops when you need them? We were now heading northbound. We get to Melrose Ave and guess what she does? Yup! She was driving every major paparazzi street, and then she complains that she wants to have her privacy? Give me a break! I was actually surprised that we didn’t get jumped.

Well, she pulls into Fred Segal but she doesn’t stop. She went in and out of the alley way. She made a left once again on Melrose Ave. Finally after following her through a few more streets, we ended up on Sunset Blvd.
She pulls into a metered parking space right off Sunset Blvd a few paces from Le Petit Four. I was able to find parking right in front of the restaurant and I waited for her assistant to feed the meter. Jessica finally comes out of her car and I hosed her clean. She smiled and everything for me. Her assistant was a little rude to me though. What does she expect? She drove through five major paparazzi streets. I was surprised that I was exclusive.

I Made Up For Yesterday By Getting Jessica Simpson Today!
Jan 19th
Today, I was taking it very easy running errands. One of my errands was to take my car for its breaks. They were starting to squeak. I took care of that! Well, I was on the road kinda late and my Pap Alert goes off. “Go to Sunset Blvd and Alta Loma, Jessica Simpson is there.”

When I get to the location, sure enough, twenty paparazzi or so where standing outside waiting for her to come out. I don’t know if anyone got her on the way in. So, I found parking one block away on a metered spot.

I get my long lens and my short lens ready. I step out of my car with both my cameras and I made my way to the location. Everyone was acting as if she did not know where she was… She could be at Sunset Tan… She could be at the Dentist Office… She could be at the message place… She could be … you get the picture.

After about 40 minutes, she finally comes out of the Acupuncture massage place. She was on the second floor and you can just imagine twenty paparazzi making their way up the stairs. It was crazy since Jessica’s friend made it difficult since she moved the car to the underground parking which meant that Jessica was going to take the elevator down. Once she got in the elevator, you can just imagine twenty paparazzi running down three flights of stairs.
She comes out of the elevator and we hosed her. It would have been easier if she would have given us the shots. Then the paparazzi would not go to extremes to get the shots. But they sometimes like to play hard to get.

Today Was A Horrible Day For Me!
Jan 18th
My Pap alert wakes me up in the morning. The tip was that Victoria Beckham was shopping at Abercrombie and Fitch at the Grove. I got ready right away and I rushed to the grove to see if I could get some shots of her. I live so close to The Grove and I thought that I was going to get there just in time. Well, nope! I didn’t make it. She had just left and I missed it all. This is when my day started.

Nothing went well for me today. I missed so many important stories that I got frustrated then everything went bad for me. It all started when I found Mary-Kate Olsen again shopping at Maxfields. It was hard to get pictures of her that I actually didn’t try to hard. Maxfields put up some black curtains all around the main entrance to the store. They were preparing for some event that was going to happen tonight. So, I just took off.

After that, I went to check on Victoria Beckham. When I got to the hotel that she was in, I noticed all the paparazzi hanging outside in the back of the hotel. They were pretty much using up most of the street. I waited there for about two hours and nothing. She never came out. Well, I left since I got the call for Jessica Simpson and Ashley Simpson shopping at Barney’s New York.

When I got to Barney’s New York, I had a hard time finding a parking space. Well, to make a long story short, I made it down to the store. I got my long lens out and I started to shoot a few crappy shots through the blocking security of the store. It was so hard to get any shots. It was chaos when she left, all the paparazzi going crazy since they couldn’t get any shots because of the store security. It was a mess.
Next time, I am going to take paparazzi to the next extreme. I really need to rethink my strategy.

What Happened to Slow Friday’s?!
Aug 13th
I called The Ninja at about 10:00 AM to see how his trek to Vegas is going. I’m about half way, The Ninja responds. The Ninja’s on a secret mission. I hope he does well.
Today I’m working solo. Normally Friday’s are my slowest days. There was a time when I only got one set of a D celeb, and I was happy to get that. On Friday’s, it seems as if celebs are home preparing for either their planned trips/vacations or are just taking the day off and relaxing at home. However, this Friday kicked my ass! I couldn’t stop spotting celebs. As I was on one celeb I would spot another and had to make fast decisions based on Hollywood’s pecking order. For example, as I was following Halle Berry southbound on Doheny Blvd., I spotted Michelle Trachtenberg heading northbound; as I was shooting Nicole Richie having lunch with her new boyfriend I spotted Harry Morton (aka Lindsay’s beau); and I also spotted another celeb driving away from the valet parking across the street from the restaurant Nicole was at. Ok, so on to my day!
I was driving around my normal route as I spotted Nicole Richie. She was sitting with her boyfriend having lunch at La Conversation. As I pulled up, Nicole grabbed her boyfriend’s hat and placed it on her head. Then she checked herself out in the window’s reflection. Luckily, I had my long lens ready. I don’t think the cars behind me minded that I was taking pictures of Nicole since they only honked once.
I got the money shot.
Just then, I noticed that I wasn’t alone. Well, I thought I had the money shot. Just like that, my money shot went down to pennies. There was another paparazzo doing it Old School style. He was on the median divider on Doheny Blvd. facing southbound, stopping traffic there also. Well, at least we spotted her at the same time.
I then circled around and strategically parked in front of the fire hydrant, right next to her table. I turned off my car and jumped in the backseat. All of a sudden, I could feel the heat quickly take over the cool car, and I felt the sweat start to roll off my face. I should have left the car on with the air conditioning.
I must have taken over 100 pictures of Nicole sitting at the table when all of a sudden this paparazzo decides to go New School. He gets in front of my car and shoots her from about five feet away. So much for stealth. Nicole got so upset at that paparazzo that she stood up and went inside the restaurant messing up the shots for the rest of us because of his New School way.

I had no choice but to go New School too. I went to find a better parking spot. I got my gear and headed back to the restaurant to wait with the other paparazzi that were trickling in little-by-little because we had been exposed. Nicole is inside by now. To complete the story, I need to get the shots of her leaving the restaurant. Not many paparazzi showed up as typically would because the majority of them were working on Britney Spears, who was also in town.
As we were waiting, Harry Morton rolls by, which, at least, gives us all something to talk about. After about an hour, Nicole comes out of the restaurant and I finished my story. No one followed her and she drove off into the jungle that is LA traffic.
I was once again on my normal route. I headed eastbound just a little past Crescent Heights Blvd. on Sunset Blvd. I made a left into the Coffee Bean parking lot and to my surprise, I spotted Jeremy Piven chatting up this lovely young lady. I took about six shots of him and drove off. I actually like Jeremy Piven’s acting. Well, let me rephrase, I liked Jeremy Piven’s acting when he played the supporting role in “A Family Man” with Nicolas Cage and Tia Leoni. I haven’t seen any episodes of “Entourage” so don’t be saying that I don’t know anything…cause in regards to that show, you would be right, I don’t know anything.

Awhile later, I was on the same part of the route heading eastbound on Sunset Blvd. when I spotted Halle Berry driving the opposite direction. Luckly there was no traffic that I could make a nice, easy, legal U-turn.
I didn’t even have to drive on the median divider and I didn’t even run the late yellow light to make a left on Doheny Drive to catch up with her.
She did not have a clue that I was there.
I am going back to the Old School ways because I am tired of being in their face, and I am tired of all the non-exclusive shots with 20 to 30 guys after the same person. Not only that, I have thousands of dollars on precision long range lens’ that are collecting dust. I want to start using them again. I want to feel like a secret agent. I want to be stealth. I want the thrill to know that I got the money shot and that the celeb did not have a clue that I was there. Yes! Those are the good ole Old School days!
So, back to Halle. She drove deep into paparazzi territory which gave me more reason to be stealth. She makes a left on Melrose Ave. Darn!, I thought. She is heading straight to Robertson Blvd. Then all of a sudden, she makes a left on this little street called North Almont Drive and she parked at a parking meter. For a second there, I did not know what to do since I didn’t want her to spot me. So, I quickly parked my car on the opposite side of the street. Unfortunately for me, I was parked on a red zone facing the same direction as she did. I was just hoping that she wouldn’t notice me.

She comes out of her car and heads straight to the parking meter. Since I was parked behind her, I could not see her do that and then she starts heading in my direction on her side of the street. She looked at my car but didn’t seem to mind since she could not see me inside the car. My plan worked and I hosed her down through the window tint. I was able to capture a few shots and then she walks into this little home and garden store on the corner of Melrose Ave. and North Almont Drive.

A few minutes later, she walks back to her car and then she heads to another location in Beverly Hills. Well, to conclude this story, I ended up with three exclusive sets of Halle and it was all done without her knowledge.
By the way, I really don’t think that she is pregnant. I think that because she was wearing this tight dress and she looked great. She wasn’t hiding her belly and I even have the side profile shot that shows her flat stomach.
It was now about 7:00 PM when I finished my day with Halle. I was now headed home with over four hundred shots to work on. It was going to be a long night!
At about 10:00 PM the Pap Alert goes off. It was a text message that I didn’t check since I was a little busy with all the editing I had to do. One minute later, the Pap Alert goes off again, this time it was a call. It must be important I thought. It was The Ninja; he was in Vegas still trying to get his shots. I answered the phone and he says to me, “I got a tip for you. Jessica Simpson is at the Factory.” “Thanks!,” I told him. Then I checked my text message, “Jessica Simpson is at the Factory FYI,” from a new friend. Ok! Ok! I get it!
I got my night gear ready and I asked my girlfriend if she wanted to go. She said, “Sure, I’ll go!” I knew that she was going just to be by my side. This is one of the many reasons why she is a keeper; she always wants to be there for me.
So we head off to The Factory Night Club on La Peer Dr., which is one street away from where I was earlier that day with Halle’s story. I get there and I see a few Paps already on high alert. Well, that is good, I thought. That means that Jessica still hasn’t arrived. There was no parking anywhere so my girlfriend dropped me off so that I could go take care of business.
Well, to make a long story short, three hours later, The Factory Night Club Security and the MTV film crew decided to give us some shots. They set up a little barrier next to the entrance of the club where we could get some shots of Jessica as she comes out of her limo.

The Factory Night Club Security and the MTV Crew, thanks for the shots. You guys where real pros. I haven’t seen such cooperation in a long time.
Well, it was now close to 2:00 AM early Saturday morning and I was going home to finish all my edits and hopefully(!), get some shuteye before having to photograph my friend’s wedding at noon!

New School vs. Old School
Aug 6th
There are four types of paparazzi – the spotters, the doorsteppers, the photographer-spotters, and the fans. Well, I guess there is also Joe Simpson, so there are five types of paparazzi.
Oh… there is also the event photographer which makes six.

The spotters are those that drive around a certain route and spot celebs in and around stores and/or driving. Now, there are also two types of car-spotters, those that can spot the celeb inside the car and those that spot the car. The Ninja, for instance, is a car-spotter. He is great at spotting a car in the distance and saying, “there goes Lindsay Lohan.” The problem with car-spotters is that if the celeb changes cars, then they will usually not recognize the celeb. I, on the other hand, can’t recognize a car even if it had to save my life. I cannot tell the difference between a Land Rover vs. a Range Rover, etc. I am a celeb-spotter. I could spot a celeb even if they are in the backseat of a limo just from their silhouette. This is why The Ninja and myself make such a good team. He makes up for my weaknesses and I make up for his.
The door-steppers are those photographers that wait outsite the celeb’s house waiting for them to come out. They follow and photograph the celeb once they have reached their destination. These types of photographers are not very good at spotting and therefore, have to wait at the celebs house for material. They sometimes don’t come out with a picture for weeks at a time since it all depends on the celeb coming out of their house. However, when the celeb does come out, the photographer usually gets a big name. I personally don’t have the patience to be sitting at a house for more than 30 minutes. I get bored easily.

The photographer-spotters are those that can’t spot a celeb even if they are standing right next to them. However, if there was another photographer taking pictures of a celebrity, then they pretend to know who the celeb is and they jump the story. Then they go home and try to find out who the celeb is. These guys/gals get all the photographers really upset.
The fan is another source of paparazzi. They use their phones, their PDAs and their little cameras to take a picture of the celeb. Usually the fan is kinda like the photographer-spotter. They come up to the photographer and ask, “Who is that?” These fans usually just get in the way of a good shot. I have actually been in many occasions where the fans outnumbered the photographers. We don’t mind the fans except when they get in the way.

Then there is Joe Simpson, the father of Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson. He Paps his own daughters and distributes his pictures of his daughters through a paparazzi agency, WireImage. Have you seen the pictures of Jessica Simpson with the rollerskates from her new video, Public Affair? If you look at the photo credits, it says, “Joe Simpson/WireImage”. He is technically a paparazzi. Go figure, the preacher-dad who Paps his own daughters!
So this leads us into New School vs. Old School. Old School are the original paparazzi from back in the day. The original paparazzi are the spotters and the door-steppers. These types of photographers are the ones that don’t like to be seen by anyone, especially the celebs. We follow three rules: 1) if the celeb sees you, they will not do what they were intending to do, therefore, you would miss photographing a more interesting story; 2) if the celeb sees you, then they can recognize you another time, making it harder to photograph them in the future; and 3) if the celeb sees you, they could get angry and possibly cause a scene (e.g., bodily harm, calling cops and wasting taxpayers money, etc.), of which you don’t want to be part of.
The New School photographers are those photographers that don’t understand the relationship between the celeb and the photographer. These are a new breed of photographers that started because they saw TV shows about paparazzi; shows like “Celebrity Hunt Club” and Hollywood Snappers,” where they follow a paparazzi. All of a sudden people think that they can do the job and since they cannot spot a celeb, they spot photographers.
Because of the number of New School photographers, and since they do not understand the relationship between the celeb and the photographer, they usually get in the celeb’s face, invading their personal space, trying to snap a shot. New School is therefore, more aggressive. Because of the number of people, the paparazzi now have to use a fisheye lens to take a picture. If you extend your hand, you could probably touch the celeb, that is how close you have to get.

Old School is more passive…give the celeb plenty of distance to the point that if they do not see you, you have done your job. This is more exciting for The Ninja and myself since we get a rush thinking that the celeb is going to open a magazine the next day or week and say, “Wow! They got me doing that?”
